The Beaten Down, The Beaten Up People of Yemen—They Deserve Better

The Arabs invented the number “zero” in order to answer question such as, “How many Yemeni citizens believe that Yemen’s President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, is about to resign?” Yemen’s president said he will resign after a fair and peaceful government is ready to take his place. But his loyal troops continue to fire on the crowds. Would that the government of Yemen regretted shooting unarmed women, men and children the way that we in America regret the shooting of four students at Kent State University on May 4, 1970 by National Guard troops.

Despite his promise in March to step down and an attack on his palace that left him injured on June 1, President Ali Abdullah Saleh remains as leader of Yemen.

Yemeni citizens continue to display great courage in the face of mortal danger. Some of the organizers are no doubt really bad eggs; but many of them know that this revolution is about making a better life for their children, a life of liberty and equality for all. They are fighting for a free world. But the freedom for which they fight is only a dream until Jesus Christ changes everything in the hearts and minds of the people. When I taught American History at a university in northern Iraq, I required my students to memorize a portion of the US Declaration of Independence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The Free World in which you and I enjoy living is for the people of Yemen just a desert mirage; until they see in the eyes of other people the image of God, until they make their leaders accountable to the people by open elections and equal application of the law. These changes begin when great men and women “learn to be the servant of all.” Leadership change is “zero change” in Yemen. That is why we are preaching the gospel in Yemen today, in order to start the revolution of the heart and mind that comes through Jesus Christ. That is why I am recognizing God’s call on more team leaders to reside in Yemen, for all who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
