Examining Ourselves During A Controversy – Wisdom from John Newton

Like it or not we all live with controversies; how shall we conduct ourselves in a disagreement? We want to win an argument, true enough. But how shall we triumph over our own tempers? I am grateful to Dr. Jerry Nelson for making available a 300 year old letter from John Newton, pastor and author of “Amazing Grace,” who offers wisdom in the season of controversy. And right now I am much in need of wisdom. Dr. Nelson writes, “A minister about to write an article criticizing a fellow minister for his lack of orthodoxy wrote to John Newton of his intention.” John Newton replied as follows here.

    Thank you for sharing this, brother. A timely word given the events of this month at the General Assembly of the PCUSA, which I struggle to serve in the spirit Newton describes…
